At first I wondered if I'd read this book previously. It's probably my carry over of H Beam Piper's Cosmic Computer in my fading memory. When we stopped following the fugitives, the deja vu stopped. The story relies upon characters that are formal military types relying upon a command structure, and no informality. There's a reliance upon computers that appear antiquated in today's society. I expected someone to mention Fortran when programming the computer. There was no data backup or other redundancy. There was some comment about the slippery slope some of the officers adopted to violate their oath of allegiance. A thing they did without more than a few crocodile tears. The only morally correct action presented by the author was one starkly painted as black against white. Somehow the only ethical thing to do was defeat the federation, and replace it with an association of planets commanded by a strong man dictator. This reeks of a peculiar type of disfavored political theory. I'm reminded of Asimov's Foundation. Remember the plans were disrupted by the Mule. There was a salvage operation that was detailed and laughable. In contrast I offer Pappy Boyington's book, Baa Baa Black Sheep. The natives had a better way of salvaging a drowned airplane than the brute force method used by the Americans. The story was fun, but it was definitely based upon last century's science and story line. Oh, and the political theory of making a government "voluntarily" disband being at all effective is a little naive. That was embarrassing.
